Brokerage options
- Interactive Brokers: primary option for non-resident-owned LLCs. Accepts global, low fees, comprehensive markets.
- TastyTrade: accepts some LLCs but limited country coverage
- Charles Schwab: tightened review for non-resident-owned LLCs
- Fidelity: limited acceptance of non-resident-owned LLCs
- Robinhood: does not accept LLC accounts
- E*TRADE: limited acceptance
Tax treatment
- US dividends: 30% default, reducible to treaty rate (15% India, 0% UK, etc.) via Form W-8BEN-E
- US capital gains: generally NOT subject to US tax for non-residents
- US-source interest (Treasuries): 30% default, often 0% via treaty
- Foreign dividends: not US-taxed
- Home country may tax both dividends and capital gains (worldwide income)
Account setup
- Open Interactive Brokers Business Account with LLC + EIN + Mercury bank
- Submit W-8BEN-E to claim treaty rates on dividends
- Fund the brokerage from Mercury or directly
- Track buys, sells, dividends for tax reporting
- Report related-party capital contributions on Form 5472
- Issue 1099-equivalent statements from brokerage for year-end tax prep
